Der Winter der ist da! Winter is Here!

Miss Nancy Piano Studio welcomes you all back after an exciting 2015! We celebrated the holiday season by bringing our beautiful music to the residents of Brookdale Retirement Home, Friendswood, Texas, on December 12. The program included solos and duets performed by Miss Nancy students and by guest performers flutist Donna Jerz and her advanced student who performed the Ernest Bloch Suite Modale. Trophies for the Jazz/Pop Festival were presented to two students as well as gift bags for all, including a German musical garland Miss Nancy brought back from Germany.

Coming up on our piano agenda is Gold Cup Festival, Saturday, March 5, Sponsored by the Gulf Coast Music Association. Students are preparing for four categories this year: Solo, Hymn, American Patriotic and Folk Song, and Theory. New pieces by a very talented new arranger composer, Jennifer Eklund, are included in our repertoire.

Long distance teaching continues at Miss Nancy Studio as she leads Little Blessings Day Care of Pottstown, PA, in French, German, Italian, and Spanish tunes. The newest hit is A,a,a, der Winter, der ist da. Ah, yes, winter is certainly here! Keep warm and practicing, y’all!

Holiday Cheer Coming Up!

I am back, Students and Parents!

What a journey it has been to Scandinavia and Northern Europe. My favorite activity was reuniting with friends and former students.  Pictured below in Germany, is former student Phillip, ready to start a new piece of sheet music. Sister Emma and mother Renate, not pictured, were also there to greet us. Switzerland had its musical moments when I found this G clef sign outside a small music conservatory. A little rest in Varenna, Italy, for 3 days was most welcome in our demanding itinerary. There we were enveloped in aromas of sweet alyssum united with wafts of bubbling pasta sauce as we walked the promenades in Varenna, Italy. Finally, we stopped to see friends in Belgium and again in Germany, where I reunited with former students Marten and Merle. How fun!

Now that lessons have resumed, students Andrew Harrington, Victoria Katei, and Christopher Lancaster are preparing to play in the Jazz /Pop Festival this Saturday 2:30 pm, at Heritage Park Baptist Church, 2732 FM 528, Webster, TX, 77598. All are welcome to hear real jazzy music during several recitals that day.

Remember our Holiday Recital coming up on December 12, 2:30 pm, at Brookdale Senior Living, 1310 Friendswoood Drive South, Friendswood, TX 77546! Playlist will include Christmas carols, classical pieces, and contemporary tunes, both solos and duets. Please bring 1 dozen cookies or small muffins to share for our party afterwards.

Miss Nancy Piano Studio is bustling with energy as the cool fall weather moves into our Texas area!

Organ intern, Victoria K. played well for Friendswood Friends Church on September 13. Her playlist included a prelude, Ode to Joy, and three hymns accompanied by Miss Nancy on the piano. Here she is at the instrument!

Miss Nancy Begins Long Distance Teaching to Pre Schoolers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania

Hi, Everybody!

What a wonderful time I had teaching songs to my young friends fromIMG_0539 Little Blessings Pre School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania! Our song list for Music Monday included If You’re Happy and You Know It, Ainsi Font, Font, Font, a little French song, The Alphabet Song, and Itsy Bitsy Spider. Seen in the photos are the children singing and playing London Bridge is Falling Down. One concept we still have to learn is making the bridge arms come down to catch the “prisoner.” Oh well, another day!

Thanks to all my singers for a musical start to the week!

Holiday Recital at Brookdale, Assisted Living, Friendswood, Texas ❄️⛄️❄️

🎄🎶Oh what fun it was playing holiday music, including Christmas carols and the Dreidel Song, for the residents at Brookdale on December 7. Guest flutist, Donna Jerz, and I started the program with 2 movements from Suite Modale. Then, sleigh bells ringing, flute and piano led the group in singing Jingle Bells. Piano students continued the program by playing their favorite carols and songs from their repertoires. Kudos to our two Jazz Festival winners, Kyndsey Jones and Ereka Jayasekara, who received trophies. All students received their recital award composer statuettes. A Brookdale resident was the lucky winner of the beautiful pointsettia door prize.

Festive refreshments were were served after the program as we socialized with parents and residents to wrap up holiday cheer for all. 🎶

The New Year is just around the corner. Now is a good time to practice up and get ready for Gold Cup Festival on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at San Jacinto College, Pasadena, Texas.

May I recommend a very effective and challenging app to improve your sight reading skills? Flash Note Derby, of course!

A very Musical Happy New Year to all!

A Very Musical Autumn

IMG_0358Hi, Students and Parents!

Our piano year has begun with great activity on the musical front. First, Victoria Katei, piano and organ student, pictured in center top, performed hymns and the offertory for church service at Friendswoods Friends Church in September. This was not Victoria’s first time as guest organist, however. In the past, she has accompanied congregational singing at Village-on-the-Park, Friendswood. Kudos, Victoria!

On October 15, I attended the teacher workshop given by Stephen Beus, award winning international pianist. Mr. Beus explained the usage of ornamentation in a few of Bach’s works, such as the Gigue BWV 997, as an opener for the three hour session. He then elaborated on Franz Liszt, his life and works. How fascinating to learn that certain keys for Lizst and many other composers are associated with religion, love, water, Heaven, and the Divine! For instance, Liebestraum in A-Flat Major is associated with Love and Water. On October 17, Mr. Beus played a brilliant concert for Gulf Coast Music Teachers Association, students and guests at the Clear Lake Presbyterian Church.

Holidays are on the way! Students are now preparing for the Holiday Recital to be held at Brookdale Senior Living Facility, 1310 Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, Texas, 77546, on Sunday, December 7, 2:30 pm. Please mark the date on your calendars.

Got performance jitters? The latest dietary solution is to eat a banana before you perform.

Have any other ideas? Please comment on this blog to let other interested piano students know your news of school, performance opportunities, and the pieces you enjoy playing most.
